Job Title: Wire EDM Operator / Programmer
Department: Manufacturing / Toolroom
Reports To: Production Manager / Toolroom Supervisor
Job Purpose
To set up, program, operate, and maintain Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) equipment to manufacture precision components in accordance with engineering drawings, quality standards, and production schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate Wire EDM machines safely and efficiently.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, GD&T, and technical specifications.
- Create, modify, and optimise CNC programs for Wire EDM operations.
- Select appropriate cutting parameters, wire types, and work-holding methods.
- Inspect completed components using measuring equipment such as micrometers, verniers, height gauges, and CMMs.
- Monitor machining processes and make adjustments to maintain dimensional accuracy.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and report equipment issues.
- Ensure compliance with quality, health & safety, and company procedures.
- Maintain accurate production and inspection records.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce cycle times and improve quality.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent engineering qualification.
- Proven experience operating Wire EDM machines (e.g., Sodick, Mitsubishi, Fanuc, Makino, GF Machining Solutions).
- Experience in a precision engineering, tooling, aerospace, automotive, or medical manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of EDM machining principles.
- CNC programming and editing experience.
- Knowledge of tolerances, surface finishes, and geometric dimensioning.
- Competent in the use of precision measuring equipment.
- Good problem-solving and fault-finding skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and quality standards.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Desirable Skills
- CAD/CAM experience.
- CMM operation experience.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement knowledge.
- Experience machining hardened materials and complex geometries.

- Machine uptime and efficiency.
- Scrap and rework reduction.
- Adherence to health and safety standards.
Working Conditions
- Workshop/manufacturing environment.
- Shift work and overtime may be required.
- Use of PPE in accordance with company safety procedures.
