What is Sinker EDM?

Sinker EDM, also known as die-sinking or cavity-type EDM, is a machining process that erodes material from a workpiece with a custom-shaped electrode and controlled electrical discharges. Unlike wire EDM, which cuts through material, sinker EDM is ideal for machining moulds, dies, internal cavities, and precision slots in hardened materials.

The electrode (typically made of graphite or copper) is shaped to match the required geometry and gradually “sinks” into the material through spark erosion, achieving extremely accurate shapes and surface finishes.
