A leading Company in the Aerospace and Defense sector, specializing in Vacuum Brazing and Thermal Processing of highly critical components.

MJ Sections were subcontracting the vacuum brazing of certain components and found this to be a costly operation for them. Both in monetary value but also due to low numbers of parts per day processed. This was just 3 per day. Something had to be done.

MJ Sections invested in their own vacuum furnace capability in-house and reached out to Erodex Inc. for support in designing the optimum fixturing solution. Working closely with the customer to ascertain their full requirements, Erodex Inc. designed a lightweight, 12-tier CFC fixture.

MJ Sections ordered the recommended fixture and have enjoyed the following benefits:

  • 36 parts per day processed versus 3 previously, an increase of 1100%.
  • 33% reduced cycle time, which also reduced their CO2 output.
  • 98% cost reduction per cycle.
  • ROI in 1.5 days.

The Erodex Inc. team demonstrated expertise and innovative thinking in the design of our carbon fiber fixture that significantly exceeded our performance expectations. Erodex Inc. advised that due to the high temperature tensile strength the CFC offered over traditional graphite, the fixture could be designed with holes throughout the material to maximize the radiant heat source, thereby improving heat transfer to the component, reducing cycle time.

 

Although some small amount of graphite was incorporated into the design to capture the compressive stress, Erodex Inc. advised this was the most economical approach as both materials have unique characteristics that make them suitable for different applications.

 

As a result of the CFC’s high tensile mechanical advantage, the fixture layer thickness could be kept extremely thin compared to what we would have expected in graphite. This reduction in thermal mass substantially reduced the cycle time and increased our load capacity. Recently we have teamed up again with Erodex Inc., receiving our second CFC fixture for our new TAV vacuum furnaces, and we look forward to working with Erodex Inc. again on future collaborations.”
